Important Facts and Information About Samui Island

Koh Samui is an island in Thailand located on Kra Isthmus’ east coast. The island is located near Surtat Thani which is a mainland town in Surat Thani Province. It is important to note that Koh Samui is sometimes referred to as Ko Samui or Samui. The island is the 3rd largest in Thailand after islands like Phuket and Ko Chang. Koh Samui Island boasts of attracting over 1.5million tourists yearly. The island measures 228.7 square kilometres. The local population is approximately 62,000. The main reason behind the islands popularity is the abundance of natural resources and scenery; the island has magnificent coral reefs and white sandy beaches.

Koh Samui History Island

Koh Samui’s existence dates back 15 centuries ago when the island was first inhabited. The original settlers of the island were believed to be fishermen from southern China and the Malay Peninsula. Koh Samui first appeared on Chinese maps in the late 1600’s. The Island was called Pulo Cornam at the time. People can only speculate about the origin of the name Samui. There is however an explanation that makes some sense i.e. the name Samui was coined from the name of a native tree called mui. The Koh or Ko means Island in Thai.ved to be self-sufficient with very little connection with other parts of Thailand. The island got its first road in the 1970’s. Before then, locals and tourists walked for 15 kilometers to cover the Islands mountainous central jungles.

Tourism

Samui Island has thrived because of tourism. For instance, resorts, luxury villas and bungalows on the island have been built solely to serve the tourists that visit the Island every year. Tourism is the main reasons why many businessmen from all corners of the world have flocked Samui to invest. There are currently over 260 luxury resorts and bungalows. This has made Samui Thailand’s 2nd largest resort center behind Bangkok.

Apart from the adequate luxurious accommodation, Samui Island attracts tourists because of having numerous festivals and events. For instance, festivals like buffalo fighting which are held on special occasions i.e. New Year attract very many tourists. It is important to note that the buffalo fighting festivals are harmless unlike the Spanish bull fighting festivals. Samui’s buffalo fighting festivals are simply meant for harmless entertainment. The buffaloes are decorated using gold painted leaves and ribbons. The festival is just meant to compare charging strength and aggressiveness of a given buffalo as opposed to the body damage inflicted.

Another popular event in Thailand is the Triathlon Event. This event is organized yearly by the ITU or International Triathlon Union. The Samui Art Party is another tourist attraction. The cultural event brings together both local and international art lovers. The event is held annually. It is hosted in high end resorts in Samui. The events focus in promoting the local art community in Samui. Another interesting event is the Samui Regatta. This event is basically a tournament for sailors. It attracts both foreign and local participation. Samui is simply one of the best Islands to visit in Thailand.

Wet Weather Weddings

During the Monsoon season (October to December), many people may not think Koh Samui is an ideal place to step into your future as Husband and Wife. While it is true the weather can be wet, it is not the constant storm that many guide books portray. In fact, some of the most beautiful weather I have ever experienced in my many years living here on Koh Samui have been in the Monsoon season. Here are a few other reasons why Koh Samui is still be a great place to get married, even if it is a little ‘wet’.

1. In Thailand water plays a large role in many of the Thai celebrations. If it’s wet on a wedding day, it is believed to both cleanse and purify the body and soul; allowing a marriage to begin fresh and new. The more water that passes over your skin on a day of celebration, the more purified you become. So if it happens to be a little wet on your wedding day, do what the Thai’s do and embrace it. If the weather is dry, ask about the “Rod Nam Sang” or Water Blessing if you want to guarantee this important tradition during your ceremony.

2. Koh Samui is a tropical island and therefore we have “wet” weather all year-round. No matter what month you visit, we often have afternoon rain-showers to cool things off. These showers usually last between 5 and 30 minutes, then disappear as if they never occurred, leaving wedding ceremonies to go ahead as planned.

3. Koh Samui can be considered more romantic during the ‘off-season’. There are always less people around at the resorts, beaches and restaurants so you always feel more intimate and private. You can enjoy the best views at dinner, the best rooms available and the best personal service while starting your new life together.

4. For those wanting an unforgettable beach wedding, but are on a budget; the lowest rates are available on most accommodations during the Monsoon season.

5. If you want to be sure you’re ‘covered’ – an outdoor marquee or canopy can be arranged to protect from all elements, while sea-side restaurants provide excellent alternative venues for severe weather.

When planning your wedding day, don’t let a little ‘wet weather’ dampen your spirits, it is unnecessary. Come to Koh Samui, relax and let the natural beauty of the island help make your wedding day unforgettable – no matter what the actual weather is like.

Choosing Your Destination Wedding Planner

Choosing the right wedding planner for your destination wedding on Koh Samui can be challenging. There are so many companies that are available on the internet and how do you know one company from the next? Here is a short list of things to consider when looking for your wedding planner on this beautiful tropical island.

Does the wedding planner live and work on Koh Samui or will you have to pay extra to have them fly in and organize your wedding? Having someone who lives and works on Koh Samui would be ideal as they will likely have the best contacts for everything you are looking for – not to mention they will save you money as they are already located on Koh Samui.

Is the wedding planner a knowledgeable, certified wedding professional or do they just help organize weddings? Having a certified wedding planner adds the benefit of professional skills that many other people would not have. Their specialized training can give you added assurance that they know what they are doing.

Does the wedding planner instill confidence in you, allowing you to relax knowing everything is being properly taken care of for you? Choosing the right company will allow you to enjoy more important things – like spending time with family and friends.

Does the wedding planner only work in the wedding business or is their attention split between other activities? When it comes to your wedding day consider having someone there who has planned and organized everything and is solely dedicated to weddings and giving you the most unforgettable memories. Knowing someone is there for you in every way will help you have the time of your life. Destination Wedding

Who will perform your marriage ceremony? There are several choices for wedding ceremonies on Koh Samui. The religious ceremonies have very little room for personalizing your wedding service as they tend to follow more traditional methods. A Celebrant is much more flexible than the others and allows for more creative freedom to have the exact ceremony you would like. A professional Celebrant would want to meet you when you arrive on Koh Samui to discuss the variety of ceremony options you have available and to finalize your choices. At the end of the day – the person who performs your ceremony is likely to be one of the most important aspects of your wedding day.

Is the wedding planner available to meet with you if you do come to Koh Samui to inspect the island? Are they happy to take you around and show you the available venues you can choose from? Is the planner professional and friendly? Destination Wedding

As you contact the various planners available on Koh Samui remember to ask lots of questions. Your wedding memories will ultimately be in their hands. You want your wedding day to be unforgettable for all the right reasons. Take the time to find the right company for you. Destination Wedding

Learning Thai Massage in Koh Samui

Marloas is nineteen years old and she comes from Rotterdam in Holland. She is in gap year from school and has taken the time to travel in Asia. She has been on the road for four months and as the trip winds to a close she has come to the Health Oasis Resort in Koh Samui to learn Thai massage.

“This is one of the best things I did on my trip,’ she enthuses. “While I was traveling I had massages. It felt so nice that I decided I would like to learn how to do it!”

“It’s just for fun. I have learned it for myself and to help my friends and family.”

No, she does not want to become a massage therapist. Her goal is to train as a medical doctor, and this preparation in massage could well help her in her aspiration to study western medicine.

Her twenty-hour course stretched over a leisurely five and a half days. So she has plenty of time for rest and relaxation in the swimming pool and on the beach beside. She laughs when she says, “I enjoyed the rest!”

“I also really liked the Course with Thai instructor Nan.”

Nan, by the way started her studies at the prestigious Wat Pho in Bangkok which serves as the premier massage teaching facility in Thailand.

“She really gets the students to practice a lot. She’s very kind and supportive, too and that helped a whole lot!” Says the young Dutch student.

“She taught me to apply my whole body in making the massage strokes.”

Marloas explains she was always afraid that her hands would become tired whilst massaging, but she was surprised to find that instead she felt energised.

“I now know the pressure points and understand how to make people relax.”

The course that Marloas attended is not designed to turn out professional therapists. It is certificated but is designed for self-development and general interest. For those eager to learn Thai massage for professional use, Health Oasis Resort offers a more intensive fifty hour period of instruction, and this too comes with a certificate.

Massage is one of several subjects that visitors can learn at the Bang Po beach side resort. Other topics include Thai Cookery, Reiki, Meditation and EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. The Thai cooking is interesting because it is geared very much to the visitor to the Kingdom. Many people have enjoyed eating Thai food in restaurants worldwide and on coming to Thailand have taken the experience to another dimension. What Health Oasis encourages is to teach visitors how to cook their favourite dishes. Naturally this requires a little notice because the instructors have to go to the market and buy the freshest ingredients possible so the ‘trainee chef’ can prepare that favourite meal. Once you have cooked it, all you then have is the pleasure of sitting down and eating your creation and hopefully you have invited some friends or loved ones to share this unique experience with you.

Family Friendly Ideas For Ko Samui

It’s always difficult to find a good balance on a family holiday to Thailand between adult and child friendly fun. If you’re worried that your kids will get restless, here are a few things to keep the kids entertained on Ko Samui

If the kids have had enough of lying around on the beach during your Thailand holiday and you are looking for something else to keep them amused why not take a look at the following suggestions: Family Samui

Hire a car (For the whole family)

The island is very accessible by car and will only take you about an hour to go around the main coast road. Many people hire jeeps or if the kids are old enough you could go for a scooter. Daily hire is pretty cheap why not visit one of the many waterfalls or see ‘Big Buddha’? These are bound to be highlights of your Thailand travel experience.

Mini Golf (For the whole family)

You can find mini/crazy courses at Bo Phut in the north of the island or there one around Chaweng Beach. These are both great ways to keep you kids amused on your Thailand holiday. If the real game takes your fancy there are also a couple of 18 hole courses including the well known Santiburi Country club and the Royal Samui Golf & Country Club.Family Samui

Snorkelling (For the whole family)

If you are going to spend your time on the beach then snorkelling will often be great from many beaches in Thailand. You can often hire the kit from your hotel or a vendor on one of the major beaches.

Go karting (For the boys)

In the north of the island around Bo Phut there is a large outdoor track that caters for all ages and has different engine carts depending on ability and age. Great for keeping the boys smiling on your Thailand trip. Family Samui

Shopping (For the girls)

Pick up some last minute bargains from a street stall or head to the shopping centre of Tesco Lotus or HomePro located around the Chaweng area.

Muay Thai Kick boxing(For the boys)

Learn this traditional martial art seen throughout Thailand at one of the boxing schools on the island. Just hope the kids don’t use their new found moves on you!

Spas (For the girls)

There are many spas on the island offering all kinds of treatments, you could try a traditional Thai Massage for a few minutes or indulge yourself for the whole day.

Fishing (For the boys)

Head out to the high seas for some big game fishing or the fresh water lake on the west of the island where you can fish.

Horse Riding (For the girls)

Want to see this island from another perspective. Head to Chaweng for a gentle ride or you can arrange to head into the mountains for a longer trek.

Thai Cooking courses (For the girls)

These are fun days out where you can learn a new skill or improve your repertoire of dishes.

Bowling (For the whole family)

Koh Samui Villas – The New Investment in Thailand

Koh Samui, Thailand continues to yield engaging options for would be property speculators and stockholders looking to do more with their portfolio. Koh Sami villas are now the latest hot investment with its big brother, the island of Phuket becoming more crowded and increasingly expensive. On top of a more laid back atmosphere, Koh Samui offers much more value for money and still keeps some of the famous Thai charm which has made the dominion so famous.

With the bulk of Thailand property being bought with money, as bank finance being just about impossible to get, the underlying valuation of property and land is being maintained, though due to most stockholders being foreign backers with a portfolio of assets, there are now some nice prospects for those with investment capital who are prepared to consider enlarging their property portfolio. Samui Villas

There are numerous magnificent villa resorts being planned by major property companies, seeing a bright future in the lush destination market. This world’s fiscal crisis in late 2008 has gives property buyers opportunities as many sellers are compelled to reduce price to make a sale in these tricky conditions. There are a few options available, both new off-plan and resale properties that now are providing buyers with heavy cost benefits.

The market now coming up to the summer season is moderately flat, with bargain properties appearing as sellers discount to excite interest. A stunning beach side villa on Koh Samui with three bedrooms, outside shower, non-public pool, walled garden and easy beach access can be had for as little as US$200,000. Sea front nine bedroom palaces go for as much as $US10,000,000 and afford all of the luxuries that one would expect in a Beverly Hills mansion.

Luxurious Koh Samui villas provide all possible ostentation and grandeur. The island has developed over time as one of the major destinations for luxury vacation lovers. Stunning beaches, pretty natural environment and decorative sea and wild life of Koh Samui attract lots of travelers each year. They’re well-connected to airfields and markets.

Whether or not it is honeymooners, families, old folk or children, everybody has a motivation to save at Koh Samui. Over US20,000,000 has been licensed to maintain the roads on the island after years of neglect. A team of students from Rajabhat Institute are also starting a campaign to keep the beaches clean. With such attention to details, this island paradise is sure to remain a hot destination for years to come. Samui Villas

What to Do on Koh Samui

Samui has lots to offer visitors and if you like lazing on the beach,

then there are more than a few to check out with white powdery fine sand, coconut palms and a turquoise ocean just tempting you to dive in.

Chaweng is one of the livelier beaches on the island filled with holidaymakers seeking action and excitement, the place to go if you like water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, speedboats, parasailing and banana boats.

If you yearn for something quieter then you might prefer a quieter location away from the crowds and no-one to bother as you lounge on your sunchair with a favourite book in hand.

A popular day trip is to charter a boat and spend the day exploring the best snorkelling sites and coral reefs amongst the nearby tropical islands. The Koh Samui archipelago has more than 60 islands to discover and many of them are uninhabited.

On the island itself you could try your skills at the shooting range, or go-carting – if you want to get the blood racing then bungee jumping is an extreme sport that will test your courage. Relaxing activities include a sedate horse ride along the beach, or there are more than a few first-class golf courses around the island. The international standard Santiburi Country club is of an international standard with an 18 hole course set in the hills behind Mae Nam Beach.

The fertile sultry jungles found inland on Samui can be explored on foot or by bicycle, or follow the coast road that runs right around the island, it’s the perfect way to get a first hand look at the difference between the southern part of the island inhabited by locals and the busier tourist areas in the north.

There are lots of organised activities for those looking to fill up their days, including many that let you find out more about local culture and island wildlife, if you want to get the most out of your day then consider signing up for a tour which will show you the best sights of Samui in one day.

Visit the Big Buddha temple with its 15m high buddha looking out to sea, or the quirky Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks located south of Lamai Beach. Namuang waterfalls and the town of Nathon are other interesting places to check out.

Some tours have a particular focus that introduce you to the local culture and food, discover the monkeys who are trained to climb the tall coconut palms and collect coconuts, go for a ride on an elephant, admire waterfalls and take photos of the local fauna including butterflies, snakes and crocodiles.

The evenings are cooler in Koh Samui and perfect for sitting under the stars feasting on seafood caught fresh that day and cooked over an open fire. If you prefer French or Italian cuisine then it’s available too, and for local Samui cuisine make your way to Huathanon Seafood in Fisherman Village at Bo Phut Beach.

Only a small section of Samui offers busy bars and clubs at night, if you prefer peace and quiet then opt for a stroll along the beach or visit a quiet restaurant. Of course if dancing and partying is why you’re here then Chaweng’s Beach Road has everything you need. For the hardcore party goers you can catch a boat to Koh Pha Ngan nearby and the famous full moon party.

Choosing your accommodation on the island you can opt for simple or first-class, cute beach huts with thatched roofs and seaview balcony or lavish 5-start resorts, Koh Samui hotels has it all and Chaweng has numerous quality hotels to fit all tastes and budgets.

Choosing koh Samui as your holiday destination means leading the kind of life you generally only wish for. Book your dream holiday today and prepare yourself for total bliss.
